GOP Representative Mo brooks (R-AL) said yesterday that “people who lead good lives” and “have done the things to keep their bodies healthy” should receive reduced healthcare costs, while sick individuals should be expected to pay more.
This directly contradicts President Donald Trump’s statements in an interview with Bloomberg News that same day, in which he said: “I want it to be good for sick people. It’s not in its final form right now. It will be every bit as good on pre-existing conditions as Obamacare.”
The Republican Obamacare replacement, or Trumpcare for short, failed to pass in March because moderate Republicans would not vote for a bill that didn’t include protections for those with pre-existing conditions.
CNN’s Jake Tapper notes in his interview with Brooks that the new bill fails to deliver the President’s promise. Tapper said:
“This new legislation would allow states to opt-out, and allow insurance companies to refuse to sell insurance to people with pre-existing conditions, as long as there’s some set-up for them, did he not understand what was in the bill?”
“That’s not my understanding of the way the bill has been reframed. My understanding is that it will allow insurance companies to require people to have higher health care costs to contribute more.
[The bill reduces] the cost to people who lead good lives, they’re healthy, they’ve done the things to keep their bodies healthy, and right now, those are the people who’ve done things the right way.”
You read that right. A republican just blamed sick Americans for their own illness and deems that they should pay more because they are ill. What the hell happened to compassion and human decency?
Under Obamacare “pre-existing conditions” covers a variety of medical problems, including asthma, diabetes and cancer. Before Obamacare was passed, insurance companies were legally allowed to refuse cover to people on the basis that they had pre-existing conditions. They could also charge people more money for having such conditions.
It comes as no surprise that Republicans are legislating in favor of insurance companies. It also comes as no surprise that Trump doesn’t know the contents of the bill.
It’s a bad time to be sick in America.
