The first death of America’s “alt-right and far-left civil war” has occurred.
On Saturday, in Charlottesville, VA, a man drove his car into a crowd of counter-protestors at a white supremacist rally, ultimately taking the life of one,
Charlottesville Mayor Mike Singer confirmed the death caused by the crash.
“I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here. I urge all people of good will–go home,” Singer tweeted.
The crash took place just before 1:45 p.m. Saturday in Charlottesville as counter-protesters were milling about the streets of the town.
Earlier in the day, white supremacists were scheduled to hold a rally in Emancipation Park called “Unite The Right.” The protest was supposed to show unhappiness with the decision of the town to remove a statute of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, but it became a gathering point for white supremacists aroudn the country.
That led to counter protests from anti-fascist and other leftist groups. Clashes between the two sides took place throughout the morning and local and state authorities eventually declared a state of emergency.
Police then declared the rally an “unlawful assembly” and shut it down.
I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here. I urge all people of good will–go home.
