The Democratic-led opposition to President Trump and his Republican monopoly of the federal government is over. What’s collectively become known as “The Resistance,” has been crushed, and whatever you may still see on TV or on the internet to the contrary, is fake news.
That, at least, is what two California Republican Congressmen are telling the party rank and file. Both Rep. Darrell Issa and Rep. Devin Nunes have made comments recently that at least give the appearance that, whatever actual resistance there may have been at one point, has receded and no longer poses a threat to the Republican agenda.
Rep. Issa, who represents coastal suburban communities roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, spoke at a Republican Party dinner recently. After his speech was interrupted by protesters, he told the audience, “They’re pathetic. There were almost none. There’s a couple million people in the surrounding communities and to have those few tells you the real momentum of this movement has really died. The same has been happening at our office where they come every Tuesday. There’s less every week.”
The comment was recorded by Seema Meht of the LA Times.
Rep. Nunes represents a more rural district in California’s central valley. Last week, he delivered the keynote address at the Orange County GOP’s annual Flag Day Salute dinner in Irvine, CA. In his meandering remarks, he delivered a full-on rant about reporters and fake news, and seem to lay the blame of last week’s Virginia shooting at the feet of the media for hyping the Resistance.
“Every night there’s a news story that runs that … has something in common. It’s anti-Trump, anti-Republican, and promotes this nonsense that you’re seeing with protesters everywhere. And they continue to promote it, which continues to promote violence. And you see the latest fiasco with, you know, cutting off Donald Trump’s head to attacking him on stage, or having a Julius Caesar play look like it’s him on stage.”
Is the resistance dead, or this all just a cheap ploy? It certainly is plausible that Republicans are engaging in an orchestrated show of manufactured indifference to reassure and distract nervous villagers as the barbarians are gathering at the gate.
But maybe the barbarians just aren’t pounding on the gate hard enough. So, we’re just going to leave these four phone numbers here. They’re the direct lines to the field offices for these two fine Republican congressmen. What you do with them, is up to you.
