Sarah Palin Just Victim Shamed The Women Bill O’Reilly Harassed

In an interview with former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked her if she had ever experienced harassment or intimidation at FOX News in her time working there.

Palin ducked the question, saying only “I wouldn’t put up with anything that would be perceived as intimidating or harassing.” Further diverting attention from herself, Palin continued:

“At the same time if a woman believes that she is being intimidated and harassed, she needs to stand up and do something about it, not stick around for a paycheck for years and years and years, and then after the fact complain about what she went through.”

By unwittingly shaming the victims of FOX’s sexual harassment claims, Palin has shown that she has little regard for what the embattled women did experience there.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper today interviewed Kirsten Powers, a CNN political analyst, who experienced firsthand O’Reilly’s abusive behavior. When she attempted to report it – to O’Reilly’s executive producer and even Roger Ailes – no one helped her.

“And so this was the culture, which was Bill was just too big and there was nothing you could do about it. So I did quit his show and I didn’t do it for two or three years. This was in an election year, this is the biggest show at Fox. And then about three years later, I went back and I said, look, I’m willing to give this another try… But it just spoke just spoke volumes that I had to completely handle it on my own, that there was nobody that was willing to say anything to him, just to basically say you can’t treat one of our political analysts this way.”

It should be noted, as well, that as a contributor for FOX News, Palin had a media studio built in Alaska, meaning she probably had less exposure to such harassment as other women did. Of course, that did not stop her from shaming the women who have overcome seemingly insurmountable hurdles.

Palin has already shown an egregious proclivity for lying, but when her shameful, baseless, and bigoted comments affect others – especially those already reeling from a traumatic ordeal – she has crossed a line.

Palin’s political career died years ago. Before continuing to publicly misrepresent the truth, she should take that as a hint.
