President Trump and his regime have made un-American attacks on the free press a hallmark of their White House tenure. Generally, the war on the truth is designed to discredit and malign valid criticism against Trump’s corruption, bigotry, or narcissistic self-enrichment.
Today’s attack on CNN’s Jim Acosta by Trump’s social media director, Dan Scavino Jr., was entirely unprovoked and quickly became an unnecessary self-inflicted wound.
Covering wreckage from Hurricane Irma and the clean-up effort, Acosta tweeted a picture of a pile of scrapped mobile homes, personally standing front and center to give a powerful sense of perspective with the heap dwarfed the reporter:
They had to make a pile of the destroyed mobile homes in this community Trump visited in SW FL. pic.twitter.com/rKPBiERIUc
— Jim Acosta (@Acosta) September 14, 2017
For some reason, however, Scavino saw this as a shot across the bow in Trump’s war on the free press and quickly struck back in nonsensical fashion:
WH 'reporter' who loves to seek attention & make the news all about himself, rather than the actual news itself. 'Had to!?' SAD TWEET JIM!! https://t.co/oMGQ0U3gKh
— Dan Scavino Jr. (@DanScavino) September 15, 2017
Scavino’s insinuation that it was “SAD” and not newsworthy for Acosta to report that the community “had to” clean up from a hurricane is certainly bizarre. More than that though, it’s an indication of team Trump’s itchy trigger finger when it comes to attacking the free press. That is to say, they need no valid reason at all, only an opening to discredit.
Acosta responded as he always does, by owning his attacker. Let’s hope he never stops striking back against vicious dishonesty or reporting the truth.
To begin the process of cleaning up the neighborhood Dan. Have a second cup of coffee. https://t.co/MIpRT4BfT1
